Please read the questions below for helpful information on how the ISYE Asia Summer Program works. These answers should provide clarity on what to expect, but if you have further questions, don't hesitate to reach out to the ISYE Asia team at asia@oie.gatech.edu.
· Q: Will we have any free time? How much?
On the program you will spend Monday through Thursday in class during the day with the evenings free, but keep in mind that there will be take-home assignments as you are participating in a rigorous course schedule. On Fridays, there are no classes, so you get to spend most of the three-day weekends throughout the program as you would like. The exception is a few weekend day trips we will go on as a group. You may have a few guided tours in the city in which you will walk to important monuments and sites.
· Q: What do the academics look like?
You will be taking 12 credit hours on this program with three of the four courses contributing to ISyE major coursework. Each class is taught on its own during a 2.5-week period with three to four hours of in-class time per day. Our courses can be quite rigorous and challenging, but you learn a lot! The group will be taking the same course at the same time, so you will have plenty of people to study with as well as frequent access to the professor as classes are small (<35 students) in size. You’ll have essays, quizzes, exams, and other homework assignments. Typically, something is due about every other day during the program.
· Q: What are the accommodations like?
We will be staying at on-campus accommodations at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. The NUS dorms consist of three- five person suites with individual rooms and a shared kitchen and bathroom. Both accommodations include laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.
· Q: Is there a packing list for the program? What should I bring?
Yes, there is a packing list that we will provide you. You are allowed one checked luggage and one daypack (bookbag) (1 suitcase that is maximum 52oo cubic inches), so it's best to pack light! This is to ensure there’s enough space on the coach buses. There will be laundry
facilities available throughout the program, but please note that you’ll likely need to pay for laundry with local currency.
· Q: How much does this program cost?
An estimated cost breakdown is provided as part of the application process online at https://isyeasia.oie.gatech.edu/program-costs . Arrival and return flights must be paid individually (not via your GT student account), but airfare from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City is part of the program charge. Tuition, fees, and the remainder of the program fee will be charged to your GT student account after registration.
· Q: Where can I get food? Do you go out to eat? Cook at the dorm?
There are a variety of options when it comes to food in Singapore. The university will provide 40% of meals. The campus at NUS has a reasonably priced Canteen and sit-down restaurants. Also, you can go into the city for a greater variety of options and restaurants. If you prefer cooking, the accommodation comes with a kitchen and basic cooking tools. In Vietnam, the hotel provides free breakfast and several nearby food options.
· Q: How long does the program spend in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh?
The program typically lasts 11 weeks with the first half spent in Singapore and the last in Ho Chi Minh.
· Q: How many people typically go on this study abroad program?
The number varies year-to-year, but in general we are a small group with 24-35 students. This allows you to develop a close relationship with your peers as well as room for discussion and in-depth learning in a classroom setting.
· Q: Are the classes taught only by GT Professors?
During the program you will be taught by both GT professors and visiting professors from NUS, but the group will always have a GT group leader, professor, or TA present when abroad.
